CLEVELAND —

Junior forward Jerran Young came out of the locker room after the game Wednesday, sweeping the floor with a green-handled broom on his way to the bus.

That’s one way Wright State celebrated a season sweep of Cleveland State. AJ Pacher and Kendall Griffin said the team would also stop for milkshakes on the way home, as they do after every road win, and with the circumstances surrounding this 50-41 victory, they all deserved extra-large shakes.

Despite playing without two of their best players, the injured Cole Darling and Reggie Arceneaux, Wright State delivered its best defensive effort of the season and pulled away in the final seven minutes. The victory gives Wright State (18-9, 9-5) a share of third place with Green Bay in the Horizon League with two league games remaining.

“Anytime arguably your two best players are out, it’s going to be a blow to your team,” Griffin said, “but we have guys that can step up and fill those roles every night. I wasn’t too worried.”

Darling, who injured his foot Sunday, and Arceneaux, recovering from a concussion suffered eight days earlier against Valparaiso, account for about a third of Wright State’s offense, averaging 21 points between them.

Without them, Wright State did struggle on offense, but not nearly as much as the Vikings. Cleveland State shot a season-worst 26 percent from the field. The Vikings took 22 more shots than Wright State (61-39), but each team made 16 field goals. Wright State had a big edge at the free-throw line, making 14-of-17, while the Vikings (13-16, 5-10) made 5-of-10.

Wright State coach Billy Donlon said he didn’t make many adjustments after losing Darling and Arceneaux.

“You just move forward,” Donlon said. “Next man up. Cole is an all-conference guy, but Jerran Young and J.T. Yoho are good players. I didn’t know how much (losing Darling) would impact us defensively. I thought we would be fine. We stayed who we are. We wanted to get it inside, take care of the ball and make it a half-court game.”

The Raiders trailed 21-18 with 4:43 left in the first half and then ended the half with a 7-0 run. Young, who scored 11 points, got to the free-throw line twice and drained all four shots. Pacher hit a 3-pointer, and Wright State led 25-21.

Each team went cold in the second half, so cold they might as well have been playing outside at Cleveland Browns Stadium. From the 15:00 mark to the 8:00 mark, the teams combined to score four points, all on free throws.

Then the Raiders seized control — a jumper by Griffin, a 3-pointer by Matt Vest, who led the Raiders with 12 points, a layup and then a 3 by Pacher and then the dagger, a 3 by Vest with 3:27 left to give Wright State a 47-37 lead.

It’s just the latest impressive victory for a Wright State team that has been especially strong on the road all season. The Raiders have now swept Green Bay, Milwaukee, Loyola and Cleveland State. All four teams were picked to finish above them in the Horizon League — then again, every team was picked to finish above the Raiders.

Missing two players didn’t prove to be a big deal for the resilient Raiders.

“All year we’ve played deep in numbers,” said Pacher, who had 10 points “That’s been the best strength of our team. The depth on our team is incredible.”
