OXFORD —

It’s been just over two weeks since Miami University’s men’s basketball team last saw Kent State. The memories are not good.

The Golden Flashes battered the visiting RedHawks 87-70 on Feb. 13 at the M.A.C. Center, and the game was not as close as the score might indicate.

“They got to every loose ball, their sense of urgency was greater than ours, and once they got rolling, we couldn’t do anything to stop them,” MU coach John Cooper said. “They were on edge. We didn’t do anything to match that.”

Miami will get another crack at KSU on Saturday when they meet at Millett Hall in the RedHawks’ last home game of the season. The RedHawks are 8-18 and lurching down the stretch — the Flashes are 16-12 and have won four of their last five.

“I feel like we need to do some soul searching ourselves,” MU junior forward Jon Harris said. “The coaches are putting together the game plans. We’re just not executing right now.

“We’re making little mistakes that we should be building upon, but we keep making them game after game after game. We need to get our focus back and dig in. Our confidence is still there. We know what we’re capable of.”

Miami has lost six straight and 10 of its last 11. Road games against Akron and Ohio loom next week.

“You’ve got to play every game on your schedule,” Cooper said. “Good teams don’t worry about it. Good teams just go out and play the game. If you’re in the business of hiding, you shouldn’t be in college basketball.”

What should RedHawk fans expect today?

“We’re going to play like we’re the most desperate team out there, honor our senior (Vince Legarza) and just sell out,” said Harris, who’s averaging 7.2 points and 4.0 rebounds per game.

Legarza is MU’s only senior and will be honored in a pregame ceremony. He is a San Francisco native.

“It’s a special day because anytime you send a senior out, you want to send him out in an appropriate way,” Cooper said. “For the kind of person Vince is and what he’s given to our program, each and every individual owes it to himself to bring his best performance.”
