FAIRBORN —
Call it a tough night for Miami University’s men’s basketball team.
The RedHawks took a 67-59 loss at Wright State’s Nutter Center on Wednesday and did so in painful fashion. They racked up 31 personal fouls, had four players go to the bench with five fouls and drew three technicals.
Allen Roberts got the first “T” after blocking a shot with 8:06 remaining. Quinten Rollins got the second one during a scramble for a loose ball with 1:11 left. And MU coach John Cooper got the last one with 38.7 seconds showing.
“The refs were doing their job, we were doing our job — it’s just the way the game goes sometimes, especially when the other team’s at home,” Roberts said. “You don’t get calls on the road.”
The Middletown native didn’t believe he deserved his technical.
“I blocked it and said a profanity word,” Roberts said. “I guess he felt it was too aggressive in the game. I mean, it’s an aggressive game. Things are going to happen. Words will be said.
“Look at my lip. I got punched in the lip, and I didn’t get anything from that. A curse word in the course of a game I feel is a part of the game. I wasn’t doing it intentionally at anybody.”
Cooper exploded with anger when the Raiders’ Jerran Young broke free for a dunk to make it 63-53. Young clearly hung on the rim and could’ve received a technical, but there was no call.
“You have to know when you go on the road, that’s how it is,” Cooper said. “He did a chin-up, but that’s no excuse. They beat us. The better team won, and they deserved to win.
“Officials aren’t going to agree with what I’m saying. I understand that. That’s the nature of the business. I thought they worked hard. OK, they missed some calls here and there. So what? Hell, I make some bad decisions.”
A new starter: Sophomore guard Will Sullivan got his first start of the season for Miami, replacing Roberts in the lineup. Sullivan had 5 points, 3 steals and 1 rebound in 26 minutes.
Roberts said he missed Tuesday’s practice after getting a cortisone shot in his knee.
“Sullivan has done a good job,” Cooper said. “He defends, and he’s done the little things we’ve asked him to. He earned it.”
Roberts didn’t know he’d be coming off the bench for the first time this year. He said his knee felt fine Wednesday.
“It just gives you extra motivation,” Roberts said. “When you go through adversity, you’ve got to keep fighting.”
Notes & numbers: Rollins totaled 8 points, 6 boards and 5 assists for the RedHawks. … Miami was 8 of 18 from beyond the arc, with Roberts sinking 4 of 7 treys. Wright State was 3 of 13. … Young and Miles Dixon combined for 31 points in the second half for the Raiders, who have won four of their last five games. … MU is 1-6 on the road this season. Eight of its next 10 contests are at home.
