OXFORD —
The big men had a big night Wednesday at Millett Hall.
Miami University’s men’s basketball squad isn’t known for its size or inside play, but got a strong 1-2 punch from Will Felder (20 points, seven rebounds) and Drew McGhee (14 points, five boards) in a 63-60 victory over visiting Bowling Green.
Both provided season-best scoring efforts, with Felder hitting 10 of 14 shots and McGhee sinking 7 of 9.
“When we’re both playing good, we help each other out,” McGhee said. “They weren’t coming down and double-teaming me, so it made it easy to find an open spot in the post and be able to put it up and score.”
Said Felder, “I just tried to capitalize on opportunities that presented themselves, and the ball went in the basket tonight.”
Point guard Quinten Rollins said the RedHawks are working hard on their post play, and it’s starting to pay off.
“Our bigs always get good position, so that makes it easier for the guards to get entries,” Rollins said. “Teams aren’t doubling down, so it gives them an opportunity to go one-on-one, and they work on their one-on-one game every day in practice.”
Falcons coach Louis Orr was impressed with MU’s front line and had special praise for McGhee, a 6-foot-11 redshirt junior. “I thought Drew was a big lift for them,” Orr said.
Miami coach John Cooper credited McGhee, who got off to a woeful start this year, for his perseverance.
“Quite frankly, he went through a stretch where he wasn’t playing very well and he wasn’t playing hardly at all,” Cooper said. “But he manned up about it. He didn’t tuck his tail and run. He continued to work, and he continued to get better. I remember a point when it was almost like he couldn’t make a layup. Now he’s seized the moment.”
G on the spot: Miami freshman Geovonie McKnight came up big again Wednesday, taking a charge with 54.9 seconds remaining and the hosts clinging to a 61-60 lead.
Last Saturday, McKnight notched a game-ending steal to preserve the 58-57 triumph at Buffalo.
“Those are the plays that win ballgames,” said Cooper, noting that McKnight generally plays at crunch time for good reason. “He always seems to come up from a defensive standpoint. He’s able to make plays. He can really move his feet. He’s got a toughness about him.”
Falcon on a roll: Bowling Green senior guard Jordon Crawford has been a Miami killer through the years and put up 21 points Wednesday, taking his career total to 996. He’s a graduate of Cincinnati’s La Salle High School.
The 5-6 Crawford missed a 3-pointer at the end of the game, yet made 9 of 15 shots and collected three rebounds, three assists and three steals. He scored 13 points in the first half.
“It’s difficult,” Rollins said of guarding Crawford. “I’ve played against him for a while. He’s a small guard. A lot of times I put my teammates in bad positions in the first half because I was overrunning. I was gambling a little bit. In the second half, I stayed grounded. I stayed to my defensive principles.”
Notebook: Miami earned a 24-21 advantage on the boards. It was just the third time this season that the RedHawks have outrebounded their opponent. … There were only 14 free throws attempted in the game. The Falcons were 4 of 8, while MU was 5 of 6. … Bowling Green’s Richaun Holmes brought a team-leading 58.9 field-goal percentage to Oxford and made 3 of 4 tries. All of his makes were dunks during a span of 3:34 in the first half. … Rollins had seven points, four assists, two steals and no turnovers in 34 minutes for MU.
