According to the Naples (Fla.) Daily News, Centerville High School will play a non-league football game there in Week 5 next season.

The hole in the Elks’ schedule was created when Greenville reportedly backed out of the second game of the two-year Greater Western Ohio Conference crossover cycle. GWOC teams have the option of not playing those games. Last season Centerville beat Greenville 64-7.

Elks athletic director Rob Dement said parents and boosters will fund all the costs of the Florida trip.

“It’s the opportunity of a lifetime for our kids,” Dement told the Naples paper, “and we happen to have a community who supports it.”

The contest is scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 28. The date could be bumped if the matchup is envisioned as a good fit for a national television broadcast. It could land on one of the many ESPN channels.

Naples (12-1) lost in the Florida state semifinals last season. It is lumped in the sixth largest of eight Florida football divisions. Centerville was 6-4.

Barring new members or teams leaving, the GWOC crossover rotation is set through 2023. The next two-year run is 2014-15. Centerville’s Week 4-5 crossover opponents in those seasons are Trotwood-Madison and West Carrollton.

Greenon greats: Roger Culbertson, Jackie Mounts, Phyllis Pappert Garlough and Ted Stute were voted into the Greenon athletic hall of fame this month. It was only the second Knights class to be inducted.

Culbertson (1983 graduate), a football, basketball and baseball standout, was a two-time first team football All-American at Wittenberg. He has been a longtime basketball and baseball coach at nearby Tecumseh High School. Mounts (’75) was a three-time basketball MVP. Greenon was 34-2 with her in the lineup, which included an unbeaten junior regular season.

Garlough (’60), excelled in volleyball, basketball and softball. She was especially active in promoting women’s bowling throughout the Springfield area. Stute (1958 graduate) played college football at Ohio University and signed with the Browns.

Four for all: It’s rare, but the four-way tie between Fairfield, Lakota West, Middletown and Sycamore for the boys basketball Greater Miami Conference title wasn’t a first. There also was a four-way tie between Hamilton, Lakota West, Oak Hills and Princeton for the baseball title in 2006.

The GMC has crowned a boys basketball champion for 47 seasons and this is the first time four members shared the crown. All were 9-5 in conference play.

Four more: The Ohio High School Basketball Coaches Association will induct four into its hall of fame for the Class of 2013: The late Bill Cady (LaSalle), Mike Gallagher (Wooster), Carl Wolfe (Racine Southern) and Mark Huffman (Monroe Central).
