Beavercreek rolls to team title, Badin’s Morris grabs individual crown

BEAVERCREEK —

There is only one item left on the Beavercreek bowling team’s to-do list.

“We won the conference, we won the sectional, we won the district,” Beavercreek coach Joe Sumner said. “Now we want to win state.”

The Beavercreek girls took the Southwest District bowling title with 4,100 Monday at Beaver-Vu Bowl — 15 pins ahead of runner-up Versailles (4,085). Mason (3,796), Sidney (3,760) and Fairmont (3,749) round out the five state-bound teams.

Meanwhile, Badin senior Hannah Morris earned the individual district title with a 200-213-257 — 670. It was her second state berth, going last season as a junior.

“She’s had a very good year,” said Rams coach Pam Campbell. “Her average is over 200 and she was the No. 1 bowler in the GGCL (Girls Greater Cincinnati League) this year. So she was a strong contender coming in, and she realized her potential.

“It’s a little bittersweet because the team had a chance to go, too,” Campbell continued. “She would have preferred that. But she is glad she’ll be going.”

This marks the seventh consecutive trip to the state tournament for the Beavercreek girls. And, after a fourth-place finish last year, expectations are high. Megan Powers is one of three Beavercreek seniors who is making a fourth and final state trip this season.

“From sectionals on, we were saying things like ‘when we go to state’ and ‘when we win state,’ ” Powers said. “We really want this.”

Junior Colleen Hines led the Beavers with a team-high 656 while senior Shane Ewing rolled a 624. Their series ranked them second and seventh in the individual standings and landed them both on the All-District team. As is usually the case, Beavercreek also powered through Baker play with 1,167.

“They bowled well today, very consistently,” Sumner said. “This is a good caliber team and we want to win it all.”

Fairmont finale: The Firebirds saved their best for last.

Fairmont opened the district tournament with an 852, landing them in the middle of the 24-team field and more than 150 pins behind champ Beavercreek.

“I was worried,” Firebirds coach Tracy Wolfe said. “I didn’t want to dig a hole so deep we couldn’t get out of it.”

Heading into Baker play, Fairmont had pulled into sixth place but only the top five teams were heading to state. The Firebirds’ 1,092 in Baker was just enough to secure the final state berth.

“We had to fight for it,” Wolfe said. “But I’m so happy, especially for my seniors. It’s just unbelievable.”

Going solo: Jessica Sawmiller had all the motivation she needed.

The Alter junior missed the state cut by nine pins — one spot — a year ago. Sawmiller, 17, became the first Knights bowler to qualify to the state bowling tournament as her 613 series secured the fourth state berth. The top five individuals from teams not qualifying to state advanced as individuals.

Defending state runner-up Sierra Kanemoto (647) of Stebbins earned a return trip to state. McAuley junior Lexi Baker (627) and Loveland senior Rachel Leever (609) rounded out the individual state qualifiers.

The girls state bowling championships get underway Friday at Wayne Webb’s Columbus Bowl.
