LIBERTY TWP. —

Lakota East senior Stedman Lowry was feeling it Friday night.

With the Thunderhawks battling to remain perfect in Greater Miami Conference play against a Fairfield squad that was one of four with one loss in the conference, Lowry took over.

The GMC’s second-leading scorer had an 11-4 run of his own in the third quarter en route to finishing with 24 points in the Thunderhawks’ 62-44 win over the Indians as they improved to 11-1 overall and 5-0 in the GMC.

“I was feeling it there for a while,” Lowry said. “My teammates did a great job and were able to get me in position to hit some open ones. This was definitely a big one for us and everyone played well. We out-played them and I hope we keep playing like that.”

Lowry hit 10 of 14 shots from the floor, including four of five 3-pointers, in going over the 20-point mark for the fifth time this season. He missed his season high of 28 by four points.

“He is one of the top five players in the city,” Fairfield coach Tim Austing said. “Anyone who can shoot like he does is dangerous. We knew about him coming in, he wasn’t a surprise. We’ve just got to do a better job defending.”

Fairfield’s Tim Fleming had cut the deficit to 39-24 with 3:27 left in the third quarter before Lowry answered with a long trey. Fleming came back with a short jumper, but the Thunderhawk senior answered with six straight points to push the lead to 46-28. Fleming hit a three as time expired in the third quarter to cut the deficit to 15, but the Indians never got any closer.

Fairfield (7-2, 4-2) could not buy a basket early, missing its first 12 shots before Herman Brunis finally ended the misery with a shot in the lane with just five ticks left in the first quarter.

While the Indians were struggling to find the mark, Lakota East was connecting on its first six shots and eight of 11 in the opening stanza to open a 17-3 lead after one. Alex White got things rolling for the Thunderhawks with an open look in the lane less than 30 seconds into the contest. White was 3-for-3 in the first quarter and, combined with a 3-pointer by Stedman Lowry, East ran off the first 12 points.

“Defensively, I thought we played well,” Lakota East coach Wally Vickers said. “But they missed some shots early that if they roll in it would make a big difference in the game.”

The Indians made a mini-run in the second quarter behind six of T.C. Wells’ 10 points, to cut the deficit to 26-13 with 1:57 left before the break. East, though, had an answer as Lowry buried another trey for a 31-15 halftime lead.

Lowry was joined in double figures by White (13) and Myo Baxter (12) as they shot 53 percent (27 of 51) from the floor. Fleming led Fairfield with 12 points as the Indians bounced back from their 8-percent shooting in the first quarter to finish at 32 percent (19 of 60).
