Reds kick off Winter Caravan

By Mike Hartsock

DAYTON —

The Cincinnati Reds roll out their winter caravan every year hoping to get fans fired up for the upcoming season, but Brandon Phillips is still having trouble with how things ended last fall.

The Reds were ousted in the National League Division Series by San Francisco — the eventual World Series champs — after taking a 2-0 lead in the five-game series.

“Man, I’m never over that, I still think about it to this day,” Phillips said. “It’s just one of those things you never get over. Maybe we just took it for granted. You know, we knew we couldn’t lose three games in a row at home and it still stinks to this day, but all we can do is learn from the things that happened.”

The Reds second baseman and the caravan made a quick private stop at Fifth Third Field Thursday morning.

Hall of Fame broadcaster Marty Brennaman said the Reds will certainly have a target on their backs in 2013.

“This club will be a prohibitive favorite to win the division.” Brennaman said. “The two clubs who would like to think they can challenge the Reds for the title (Milwaukee and St. Louis) both have major questions.”

Phillips, Brennaman and team owner Bob Castellini — part of the Northern Tour — will be back in Dayton on Sunday from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. for the public caravan visit at the Air Force Museum. The Western Tour of the caravan, featuring Homer Bailey, Reds GM Walt Jocketty and Thom Brennaman — will make a stop in Hamilton on Sunday from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at Miami University-Hamilton’s Parrish Auditorium.
