Five thoughts from Hal McCoy

By Hal McCoy

1. More than four hours before the game, a man delivered two cases of Korbel champagne to the Reds clubhouse. The security guard pointed to the door and said, “Go right in.” And now the Korbel stays on ice another day.

2. Brandon Phillips gambled in the first inning and lost. After a leadoff single, he stole second, and when San Francisco catcher Buster Posey bobbled the ball Phillips continued toward third and was thrown out. Three of the next four reached base and the Reds scored only one run.

3. When did Homer Bailey morph into Nolan Ryan? Bailey gave up one run and one hit over seven innings and struck out 10, tying a career high. At one point he struck out six in a row.

4. The Reds had a run and three hits in the first inning, then only one the next six innings, an infield roller by Scott Rolen in the sixth.

5. Nick Lechey sang the National Anthem without missing a note and Tom Browning, who pitched a perfect game for the Reds in 1988, threw the ceremonial first pitch, a hard strike.
