Are food contests disrespectful?

We recently received a letter to the editor with a very interesting viewpoint that I’ve frankly never considered.

It was from Robert Jurick, who along with Teri Schoch is co-chair of the Partners for the Environment Food Team. He wrote:

“I just recently noted a non-profit using a pie throwing contest as a fundraiser. I’ve also observed food eating contests at festivals. Although the event planners have the best of intentions, they are showing a lack of respect for the wonderful gift of food.

“Almost all faith communities hold food sacred. Given Dayton’s ranking as one of the most food insecure cities in the United States, these activities show a lack of compassion and empathy. Can you imagine how this appears to refugees and citizens of war-torn countries?

“Please Greater Daytonians, show life-giving food the respect it deserves.”

Food for thought, if you will. Your view? Email rrollins@coxohio.com.
