DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. — Anthony Hitchens scored all of his 17 points in the second half and Akron rallied to defeat Drake 63-59 for the Zips’ first win of the season on Saturday.
Hitchens’ 3-pointer with2:08 left put Akron (1-2) ahead for good, and he assisted on Darryl Roberts’ jump shot in the final minute to seal the victory in the Glenn Wilkes Classic. The Zips, who represented the Mid-American Conference last season in the NCAA Tournament, had gotten off to their first 0-2 start in more than a decade.
Drake (1-3) led 33-27 at halftime on the strength of its 5-of-10 shooting from 3-point range. The Bulldogs held a 42-33 advantage before the Zips went on a 10-0 run. Neither team was up by more than four points the rest of the way, with Drake’s last lead coming when Seth VanDeest split two free throws with 2:22 to go.
Ryan Wedel led the Bulldogs with 14 points.
