Nearly 1.2 million in Ohio vote early

COLUMBUS —

Nearly 1.2 million Ohio voters have cast their ballots about one month before Election Day, Secretary of State Jon Husted announced Tuesday.

The state’s 88 county boards of election have reported that of 7.9 million registered voters, 59,353 have cast their ballots early and those boards have received more than 1.1 million absentee ballots, according to Husted’s office.

Additionally, 13,100 absentee ballots have been requested by military and overseas voters, according to his office.

The secretary noted that the high early turnout numbers “clearly demonstrate how easy it is to vote in Ohio.”

The announcement comes as Husted plans to appeal a 6th Circuit Court of Appeals decision allowing Ohio voters, whether military or not, access to voting in the three days before the Nov. 6 general election.

Husted said he will ask the U.S. Supreme Court to decide whether the state legislature or federal courts should set Ohio’s election laws.

His decision drew criticism from the American Civil Liberties Union of Ohio.

“Appealing the decision only injects more uncertainty at a time when voters are already confused,” said Mike Brickner, ACLU director of communications and public policy.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
