Job and Family Services to relocate some staff

By Joanne Huist Smith

A consolidation of state offices providing support services for the Ohio Department Of Job and Family Services means some local employees will report to a new work site before the end of the year.

The consolidation of 13 offices around the state, including ones in Montgomery, Shelby and Hamilton counties, will save $2 million annually, without impacting services to recipients of unemployment benefits or businesses, Benjamin Johnson, spokesman for the state Department of Job and Family Services, said.

“The move will be invisible to the people we serve. These are state support offices, call centers and unemployment processing centers,” Johnson said.

No employees will lose their jobs as a result of the consolidation.

Three area offices will co-locate at a site along the Interstate 75 corridor, which has not been determined.

The agency at 4429 Interpoint Boulevard in Dayton, which has 36 employees, is 65 percent vacant, Johnson said. That office will be consolidated with one currently in the village of Fort Lorami — 700 E. Park Street, in Shelby County — which has a staff of 37.

The 89 employees working in the state office at 225 Pictoria Drive, Springdale, which is a suburb of Cincinnati in Hamilton County, also will be joining them.

“I realize that moving to a new location will present challenges for some employees,” ODJFS Director Michael B. Colbert said. “However, we owe it to those we serve to operate as efficiently as possible. This plan preserves jobs, prioritizes people over buildings and maintains the agency’s statewide presence.”

All of the building leases are up for renewal at the end of June, which is the end of the state fiscal year.

The consolidations will be done in phases. The local offices, scheduled to move during the second phase, will relocate in the third quarter of the year, Johnson said. All of the moves will be completed by the end of 2013.
