Clouds will continue to clear this evening ushering in another night of frigid temperatures.

Storm Center 7 Chief Meteorologist Jamie Simpson said winds will die down tonight and the morning will start sunny, but temperatures will be in the low to mid-teens.

Highs tomorrow morning will be in the upper 20s at the most, he said. Watch his 5-Day forecast.

Arriving around midnight or a little after that will be a wintry mix that may start as some snow north or even some snow or sleet south of Interstate 70, with a fairly quick change to freezing rain through early morning Friday.

“We look for accumulation of ice that is a quarter inch or greater for enough weight on tree limbs and power lines to bring them down,” Simpson said. “We could come close to that in spots.”

However, he said unlike the ice storm two years ago that brought a half to three-quarters of an inch of ice, winds will not be very strong. “That was a huge factor two years ago in all the power outages.”

As it tapers down, the precipitation will change to rain from south to north from 8 a.m. to about 10 a.m. Friday.

“So some will still have freezing rain through the morning commute,” Simpson said which could lead to some travel issues.

Temperatures will climb into the low to mid-40s in the afternoon, melting that ice.

“A quiet weekend is in store with some sun Saturday and more sun Sunday,” Simpson said.

Highs will be near 40 degrees both days.

Next Monday will be a bit milder in the mid-40s with clouds arriving, then rain Monday night which will likely end as some light snow next Tuesday.
