HAMILTON —

A 21-year-old man has been charged by Hamilton police with two counts of felonious assault for allegedly firing shots at a car during a robbery attempt Saturday morning with the bullets almost hitting a sleeping baby inside the vehicle.

Michael Phillips, whose address was listed as “at large,” was arrested Sunday, less than a day after attempting to rob a couple who was fueling up their SUV at the BP gas station on Main Street at about 12:35 a.m. Saturday.

According to police reports, Jitanna Chambers and her boyfriend Miquel Shavers were pumping gas at the BP when a man Shavers knew in school approached and asked them to pull around back. The couple were met by Phillips who was holding a shotgun, according to police.

Shavers ran as he was fired at, Chambers said.

“Then he came back toward the car and started shooting,” she said.

The couple’s 9-month-old daughter, MiHaileah, was asleep in a car seat in the back of the vehicle. Chambers said the bullets narrowly missed her and the baby, as she was able to drive away. Shavers was on top of the roof of neighboring building calling for help, she said.

“I am so blessed. We were not hurt,” Chambers said. “They (the shots) could have hit my baby girl.”

Hamilton police are looking for another person of interest in this incident, Tyler Clontz, 20. Anyone with information can call Detective Steve Hamilton at 513-868-5811, extension 1274.
