Suspects in a rash of burglaries and thefts from cars in Trenton last week was caught on tape by a resident, and detectives are hopeful they will be identified.
At about 5:30 a.m.Thursday police began getting calls from residents in the Edgewood Drive about vehicles being rummaged through and items taken.
In total, 16 incidents occurred overnight Wednesday on Ashley Court, Edgewood Drive, Somerset Court and Hathaway Drive. Most of the thefts from vehicles consisted of change, GPS units and purses, but one Ashley Court resident reported the theft of a loaded Glock handgun.
“We are very concerned about a burglar having a loaded gun out there,” said Detective Jamy Chaney.
Two burglaries in the 800 block of Barrington Court are also believed to be the work of the same suspects. Garage door openers were stolen from unlocked cars in driveways and the crooks then entered the garages. They took a wallet from a car parked in the garage of one residence, according to police reports.
The suspects were also caught on tape at one of the homes. The white males, believed to be in their 20s are seen taking a garage door opener, then walking west on Barrington and returning later to take the wallet.
James Agee said his home is protected 24 hours a day both inside and out. His security cameras captured the suspects.
“I am proactive. Every citizen has a right to protect their family,” said Agee, who added he is a longtime resident of the city and has never had any problems until recently.
Police are warning residents not to become victims.
“Lock your cars. Do not leave belongings inside. Do not leave garage door openers inside vehicles,” said Chaney, who added that residents should call police about any suspicious noises or people.
Recording serial numbers from any electronics and taking photos of them will also help detectives in matching stolen items, if found, with their owners.
There has also been a rash of daytime break-ins at Hamilton residences over the past several weeks. Culprits have kicked in back doors to several homes in the Brookwood Avenue and Kingston Drive areas and walked out with televisions, jewelry and other items.
One resident, who contacted the JournalNews, said he believes two men who asked to shovel his driveway Jan. 25 and were seen looking through his home’s windows may be the culprits.
He described the men as white, scruffy males who were about 18 to 20 years old.
Since Jan. 17, four break-ins have been reported to Hamilton Police, according to Detective Rich Burkhardt, police spokesman. Only one break-in was reported from Dec. 17 to Jan. 17, he said.
“If anything looks suspicious or out of place, call police,” Burkhardt said. “People are our eyes and ears on this.”
Police met Wednesday with residents in the Millikin Street area to set up a neighborhood watch and have another meeting in the Lindenwald area later this month to start a neighborhood watch.
