Angie Farmer knew she wanted a career in art but painted a different path for herself.

Now the 41-year-old entrepreneur is helping area residents express their artistic sides at Canvas & Cupcakes, a new Hamilton business that held its grand opening celebration Saturday.

Located at 215 Main St. in a 400-square-foot storefront just above Offering’s Holy Grounds Cafe, the business aims to offer a fun and relaxed get together with paint and cupcakes.

“I’ve always been art focused and (initially) went to school for art,” she said. “Life took me in a different direction, but I knew I always wanted to get back to that creative side. .”

Farmer demonstrates and guides guests through painting their own canvas step-by-step and no experience is necessary.

The combination of art and dessert is a way to make it easier for people who want to throw painting parties and have “a little sweet treat” while doing so, she said.

Farmer’s homemade cupcakes comes in traditional flavors or just about any exotic variation, including sweet potato, mango, and coconut with key lime.

The business offers 2-hour party packages that include cupcakes, invitations and thank you cards, plus refreshments. Those who book a private party may gear it for any age group, adults and children alike.

Farmer also takes custom artwork requests and holds open sessions, where guests of any age may register online for a pre-scheduled party.

The best part about Canvas & Cupcakes is seeing what each of guest creates, she said.

“It’s just amazing, all the talent and the differences,” Farmer said. “People come in and say ‘I can’t paint’ and then they leave and they have something that looks great and they’re proud of their accomplishment.”

Farmer, said she chose to open a storefront on Main Street because of her love for Hamilton.

“It’s a beautiful city and it has so much promise,” she said. “I’m really excited about the changes that are being made and that the community is trying to make.”
