OXFORD —
Room and board rates at Miami University will raise by 2.87 percent next year.
The total annual fee for a typical meal plan and double room will jump $303 to $10,900 for the 2013-14 school year under the plan approved Friday by the university’s Board of Trustees.
“It’s important to point out that the increase covers only the rising costs of food and services,” said Mike Armstrong, national trustee who chairs the board’s finance and audit committee.
Individual costs for housing and food will vary, depending on which plans are chosen by the students. The residence halls annual fees (for multi-occupancy) will increase 1.49 percent to $5,328. The annual fee for a typical meal plan will rise 4.23 percent to $5,572.
Earlier this year, the trustees approved an increase in tuition and fees of 3.5 percent for in-state students.
Miami President Dr. David Hodge noted that when everything is taken into consideration, including the university’s high graduation rate and the relatively short average time it takes for students to earn a Miami degree, “we are the most cost-effective university in the state.”
In other business, the board adopted a resolution to add a winter academic session of 23 days, to be held between the end of the fall semester and the start of the spring semester, starting next year.
“This potentially could help students graduate sooner,” said Michael Kabbaz, associate vice president for enrollment management. “It’s another opportunity to take courses and to conduct research … and it provides a wonderful opportunity to students to study abroad.”
Kabbaz told trustees that faculty and student input will be sought in the spring on the types of classes desired for the winter term.
