Man who gave grenades to undercover police receives probation

By Ed Richter

A Hanover Twp. man arrested after arranging to turn over grenades to undercover police officers last fall was sentenced to five years probation Wednesday in Butler County Common Pleas Court.

Jeffrey Fellman, 45, pleaded guilty to a bill of information on Nov. 28 on one count of unlawful possession of dangerous ordnance, a fifth-degree felony, also received credit for serving 50 days in jail and will be required to wear a monitoring bracelet for 90 days during the sentencing hearing before Judge Michael J. Sage.

However, if Fellman violates his probation agreement, he will receive one year in prison, according to court officials.

A second count was dropped in exchange for the guilty plea and a prison term was not mandatory, according to court documents.

Fellman has been free on his own recognizance since Dec. 20.

Fellman contacted Hamilton police Oct. 30 and offered to exchange two hand grenades in exchange for having a woman released from her probation. Police said the exchange was to be at the old Golden Corral restaurant, 1532 Main St.

After Fellman gave a detective the grenades, other officers arrested him and charged him with two counts of possession of dangerous ordnance, both are fifth-degree felonies.

Police also said Fellman never made any threats or claimed to have made the explosive devices. A specialist with the Butler County Sheriff’s Office bomb squad dismantled the two grenades and rendered them safe.

A search warrant was later obtained for Fellman’s residence at 2463 Hamilton Richmond Road. Multiple IED-type devices were found in the home by police, Butler County Sheriff’s deputies and federal Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms agents. The devices included modified grenades, a box of PVC pipe bombs and other bomb-making components. Investigators said they were aware of an affidavit signed by Fellman’s mother that said the explosive devices were made by his father.
