By Ed Richter

A Cincinnati man was arrested by Hamilton police after being chased nearly a mile from a grocery store where he was seen shoplifting.

Police were called at 12:46 p.m. to the Kroger store, 1450 S. Erie Blvd., on a report of a black male in the process of shoplifting items. As police arrived at the grocery, the suspect, Darren A. Barnett, 27, of Cincinnati, was seen running south on Ohio 4. After a foot chase of nearly a mile, police arrested Barnett in the 2500 block of of Dixie Highway.

During the foot chase, an officer received injuries to both hands and arms when he slipped and fell while attempting to gain control of Barnett, according to Sgt. Ed Buns.

While police were investigating the theft from the grocer, they also learned that Barnett had also allegedly exposed his genitalia to a woman and her 14-year-old daughter while inside the store.

Police charged Barnett with two counts of public indecency, one count of resisting arrest and one count of theft. A police check of Barnett’s criminal history indicated he also has numerous outstanding warrants for his arrest out of Hamilton County for similar type offenses.

Barnett is being held in the Butler County Jail. No bond or court date had been set as of late Tuesday afternoon.
