For 36 years, Lucille Hautau worked at Miami University. She enjoyed her career there, and when she retired, she was assistant to the provost.

But now she has found her another career as a metalsmith, what she called “truly a passion” for her. Hautau, 63, of Oxford, designs and makes a unique style of custom jewelry that combines her love for metal and art.

She said her creativity is “soaring right now” and she’s having “the best time” of her life.

On Saturday, Hautau was one of 72 artists offering their wares for sale during the 10th annual Art Fair at Pyramid Hill Sculpture Park. The fair features a diverse groups of artists and entertainers. There were tents full of jewelry, wooden products, metal garden ornaments, glassware, temporary tattoos, homemade wines, and pottery, and simultaneously in the park, there were musicians playing the accordion and saxophone.

Kelly Malone, chairwoman of the art fair, said she was pleased by the first-day attendance that benefited from bright sunshine and temperatures in the 70s. The event continues from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. today. Admission is free and parking is $5.

There was a steady line of customers at the Boston Butz barbecue trailer. The husband and wife team of Frank and Sandra Butz operated the trailer and said they look forward to the art far every year. They are trying to sell their restaurant in Ross, and have reduced their number of festivals from 13 and six this year.

“We’re trying to retire,” said Frank Butz, 68, as he peeled potatoes and dropped them into the deep fryer.

He said sales were “very good” Saturday afternoon, about the same as other years.

Hautau’s booth also was busy, but she said sales were slow early in the show. Her jewelry prices range from $48 to $5,000 and many of the pieces are made of 18k gold, which she said, costs $1,735 an ounce. Some items take weeks to design and produce, she said.

Hautau teaches non-credit art classes at Miami, for beginner and advance students. She also has taught for a number of years at the Middletown Arts Center. This from a woman who jokes she failed painting.
