A Miami Twp. gun shop is planning to move to a new 27,000 square foot indoor shooting and archery range just off Interstate 75 in Springboro.

The Range at Miami Armory will bethe latest indoor Dayton-area gun range and indoor facility for archery and shooting in the Dayton-Cincinnati region.

Jeff Miller, owner of the Miami Armory, said he and partners plan to invest more than $4 million in the 27,273-square foot facility to house indoor gun and archery ranges, as well as space for training, including interactive simulators; a lounge and retail shop, according to information submitted to the Springboro Planning Commission. Miller estimated hiring 12-16 employees. The armory will be just south of the Dayton Mall in Miami Township.

In addition to capturing demand for indoor shooting facilities, the business hopes to lure archery enthusiasts, including those attracted to the sport after watching the movie “The Hunger Games,” starring a bow-carrying heroine.

Bullet traps and deceleration chambers will capture used ammunition and feed left-over lead into a containment system. The heating and air conditioning system will be designed to collect airborne contaminants, Miller said.

Up to 15 archers and 40 shooters will be able to shoot simultaneously, leaving open the possibility of regional competitions.

“We hope it’s going to be one of the best training facilities in the nation,” Miller said.

By the end of the year, the range is to open in a new building at 45 Commercial Way, in an industrial park on the edge of Springboro, just east of I-75 at the Ohio 73/Central Avenue interchange, Miller said.

Currently there are three Dayton-area indoor ranges, Vandalia Range & Armory and Miami Valley Shooting Grounds and Sim Trainer in Moraine. Target World, north of Cincinnati, in Sharonville is the only other commercial indoor gun and archery range in the area.

Miller and Doug Hague, owner of Vandalia Range, believe there is unmet demand.

“It seems like people are wanting to shoot,” Hague said. “Gives them a safe place.”

The Springboro Planning Commission is expected to approve the plan on March 27.
