OXFORD —

Oxford police said they arrested a Fairfield man after he allegedly raped a Miami University student early Friday morning.

Fransisco Naupa Rivera, 23, allegedly entered a home on East Spring Street and touched a sleeping female on her arm, according to Sgt. Jon Varley. Rivera allegedly told the woman he was looking for a male friend and quickly left the house. No men live in the house.

The woman gave a description of Rivera’s car to police, who located it about a block away at a home on East Collins Street. Police found the front door of the home open and a side door ajar. Once they entered the residence they found Rivera and a woman reported he raped her.

Varley said Rivera told police first he was a looking for a female friend and then said he was searching for a male friend. No one in the house knew him.

Police charged him with rape, aggravated burglary and burglary. He is in the Butler County Jail.

The victims were both Miami students; Rivera is not.

Police Chief Bob Holzworth cautioned everyone to be vigilant. In both cases, doors at the home were unlocked.

“Crime is everywhere, even in a quiet community like Oxford,” he said. “The Division of Police wants to remind all residents that home and personal security begins with locking your doors and windows, particularly at night. This simple step is often enough to dissuade an intruder. “
