COLUMBUS — State Sen. Michael Skindell, a Cleveland area Democrat, will run against Supreme Court Justice Terrence O’Donnell in the Nov. 6 general election.

The Ohio Democratic Central and Executive Committee unanimously voted Tuesday night to nominate Skindell as the party’s choice to face O’Donnell after candidate Robert Price withdrew from the race in April.

Skindell holds a law degree from Cleveland-Marshall College of Law and is the ranking member on several committees including the Senate Judiciary Committee.

Before being elected to the state senate in 2010, Skindell served four, two-year terms in the Ohio House of Representatives and two terms as a Lakewood city councilman in northeastern Ohio.

Skindell and Rep. Dennis Murray, D-Sandusky, filed a lawsuit against JobsOhio, Gov. John Kasich’s private job-creating department, claiming its use of public funds is unconstitutional.

The 10th District Court of Appeals in Columbus didn’t rule on its constitutionality, but threw out the case on the grounds the plaintiffs didn’t have jurisdiction. In a statement Tuesday, Ohio Republican Party Chairman Bob Bennett said Skindell’s “left-wing ideology makes him unfit for the state’s highest court.”
