First Financial size ranked tops in Butler

By Chelsey Levingston

First Financial Bancorp continues to be Butler County’s biggest bank, according to updated industry information released Tuesday.

The bank holding company, formerly headquartered in Hamilton, has deposits of approximately $1.3 billion in the county, a market share of more than 31 percent, according to the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. However, that’s less than the amount of deposits the bank held in the county the year before. At the end of June 2011, First Financial had Butler County deposits of about $1.4 billion, more than 33 percent market share, according to the FDIC.

First Financial dropped in the list to the fifth biggest bank for the whole Cincinnati market.

“Despite dropping one market share position in Greater Cincinnati, we are still the largest community bank serving the market and we continue to bring the First brand of banking to more communities throughout the area,” said Jill Wyman, First Financial co-chief retail banking officer. “We are well positioned to continue executing our client-focused business model and provide our clients with efficient, customized and high-quality service and solutions.”

The banking regulator released updated deposit information for June 30, 2012, which it releases once a year. Deposits indicate how many customers a bank has and how much money customers have at the bank in savings and checking accounts, and certificates of deposit.

Cincinnati-based bank Fifth Third Bancorp is gaining on First Financial in Butler. Fifth Third saw an increase in deposits to $1.099 billion this year, 26 percent of the market, compared to deposits the year before of $1.034 billion and 25 percent of the market, according to the FDIC. This is in spite of Fifth Third closing in 2011 its High Street branch in downtown Hamilton.

Behind First Financial and Fifth Third, U.S. Bank has the third most deposits of approximately $462 million, 11 percent of the county market.
