FAIRFIELD —

Fairfield police are investigating an abduction attempt of a Fairfield student Thursday morning.

A white male in his early 20s offered a female student a ride while she was waiting at a bus stop along Resor Road, according to Fairfield police Chief Mike Dickey.

The girl’s school bus pulled up and the man left the scene, Dickey said. The girl alerted the bus driver, who then told authorities.

Fairfield City Schools sent a letter to parents Thursday afternoon advising them of the attempt, spokeswoman Gina Gentry-Fletcher said Friday.

“Please continue to teach your children safe practices as they walk to their assigned bus stops, while waiting at the stop, or while walking to school,” the letter from the district advises parents. “We also encourage you or a trusted neighbor, relative or family friend, to escort your child to the stop and wait with them until the bus arrives. If your child walks to school, encourage them to walk with a group.”

This marks the fourth reported abduction attempt since late January in Butler County.

Hamilton police are investigating two child abduction attempts. A 9-year-old girl was nearly abducted by a man in a white van as she was walking along Heathrow Court around 8 p.m. on Jan. 28, and three boys, ages 10, 11 and 13, reported being chased by a man who jumped out of white van on Williams Avenue on Jan. 31.

Butler County sheriff’s investigators are searching for a man who tried to lure a 9-year-old Liberty Twp. boy into his car with the promise of a comic book along Long Drive on Feb. 4.

Dickey said Fairfield is cooperating with neighboring police agencies in searching for the suspect.

“We have assigned a detective to the case. We had additional patrols in that area, including an unmarked car. We were also on the bus routes this morning for visibility purposes,” he said.

Strategies for preventing abductions

  • Point out homes of friends around the neighborhood where your children can go in case of trouble.
  • Teach your children to move away from any car that pulls up beside them and is driven by a stranger, even if that person looks lost or confused.
  • Avoid dressing your children in clothing with their names on it — children tend to trust adults who know their names.
  • Set boundaries about the places your children go. Supervise them in places like malls, movie theaters, parks and public bathrooms.
  • Monitor your children’s Internet activities and avoid posting identifying information or photos of your children online.
  • Develop code words for caregivers other than mom or dad, and remind your children never to tell anyone the code word.
