HAMILTON —

A new club at Badin High School is serving up culinary delights for the community.

The school’s culinary club — with about 60 student members — has been in the beginning stages for three months, and will hold its first fundraising event, Soup’s On, from 4 to 6 p.m. Feb. 23.

During the event, culinary club members will be preparing, cooking and serving a choice of either loaded baked potato or broccoli and cheese soup — for carryout or dine-in inside the Badin cafeteria. A bread choice will also be provided.

“(The students) are enthusiastic about food, and about showing the public what they can do,” said club moderator David Gretz, a technology teacher. “We’re really looking forward to this event.”

Gretz said the group is planning a few themed meals and will be fundraising to eventually prepare a meal for the Community Meal Center at The Presbyterian Church in downtown Hamilton.

“(Students) go to the meal center every other Friday and help serve the food,” Jones said. “We want to buy the food and cook it; we want to do it all and take over for a night.”

Senior Noah Jones, president of the club, said after graduation he plans to attend the Midwest Culinary Institute at Cincinnati State. His goal is to eventually open his own sports bar.

“I want to learn pretty much everything (about cooking) and get the basics down and tighten up my skills before the actual program,” Jones said. “I hope this goes down as one of the best clubs at Badin.”

Advanced ordering for Soup’s On can be made online at www.badinhs.org. and is required by Feb. 12. The first 100 customers will receive a handmade ceramic bowl donated by Mr. and Mrs. Don Knickerbocker, grandparents of a Badin student.

Prices are $8 per bowl; $25 for a family pack; and $16 per quart for carryout orders.

“It’s been impressive to see the number of students interested,” Gretz said. “With all different skill levels, from those would couldn’t boil water to others with very specific dishes and specialties.”
