MIDDLETOWN — One day after Father’s Day, and two days after his 30th birthday, Michael Dunn was asked a question he was unable to answer.
“Were you with mommy?” Brandon Dunn, 5, asked his father who just returned home Monday afternoon. When his father didn’t answer, Brandon asked: “When is mommy coming home?”
Michael Dunn wiped away the tears and reached down and rubbed his son’s head.
On Monday morning, Christina Dunn, a wife and mother of three young kids, died in an area hospital following a disturbance in a Middletown street Sunday night. Middletown police said Dunn, 27, of the 500 block of Moore Street, died around 9 a.m. at University Hospital in Cincinnati.
“Some birthday present and Father’s Day, huh” said Zena Witt, Michael Dunn’s mother. “We’re all just in shock around here.”
Middletown police charged the driver of the vehicle, Dustin Watkins, 23, of Harrison Street, on Monday with felony fleeing the scene of an accident and tampering with evidence, and Maria Misquez, 31, of Baltimore Street, with complicity to fleeing the scene of an accident.
They’re in the Middletown City Jail and are scheduled to be arraigned at 9 a.m. Wednesday in Middletown Municipal Court. Maj. Mark Hoffman of the Middletown Division of Police said additional charges may be added pending the results of the autopsy performed at Hamilton County Coroner’s Office.
Police were dispatched to Moore Street and Wayne Avenue around 9 p.m. Sunday and they found Dunn lying in the street, unresponsive and bleeding, Hoffman said.
He said Dunn was standing outside a vehicle and there was an argument with Watkins. For an unknown reason, he sped away, dragging Dunn “some distance,” Hoffman said.
Witnesses said Dunn’s arm got stuck in the seat belt. After she was dragged, she came loose from the seat belt, and was run over by the vehicle. A witness told police that one of the vehicle’s front tires ran over Dunn.
Michael Dunn, a self-employed painter, said his wife of three years was struck by a man he’d hired to paint, but he said the man never showed up after receiving payment up front. Dunn said he repeatedly called Watkins about the money. That’s why Watkins stopped by Sunday night to discuss the situation according to Dunn.
The Dunns have three children: Jonathan, 9, Morgan, 8, and Brandon. Christina Dunn, who attended Madison schools but never graduated, suffered from several serious illnesses, including diabetes, her family said. Katie Piersall, 19, who used to live next door, said “all she ever worried about was these babies.”
Arrangements are incomplete at Herr-Riggs Funeral Home in Middletown. The family plans to establish a bank account for donations to pay for the funeral, Witt said.
