SPRINGBORO — Two Indiana men appearing Monday in federal court on charges stemming from Friday’s standoff at a Springboro bank were released less than a year ago from Indiana prisons.
Anton Alexander and Anthony Phillips surrendered Friday to law enforcement officials in Springboro, ending a five-hour standoff at the Fifth Third Bank on North Main Street.
Alexander, 35, of Pendleton, Ind., and Phillips, 43, of Fort Wayne, Ind., each served multiple terms in prison in Indiana, according to Indiana Department of Correction records.
Alexander was paroled on July 28 from the Correctional Industrial Facility in Pendleton after serving 10 years for armed robbery in Whitley County.
Phillips was released on May 28 from the Westville Correctional Facility after serving about 18 months for possession of drugs in Madison County and theft or receiving stolen property in Allen County.
Indiana records show Alexander also spent time in state prisons for carrying a gun without a license in 2001 in Whitely County and possession of cocaine or other narcotics in 1996 in Allen County.
Phillips served a series of prison terms during the past 20 years.
His past charges include resisting arrest, possession and sale of cocaine or other narcotics, theft, receiving stolen property, battery and conspiracy to sell drugs, according to prison records.
In Friday’s incident, police from five area departments as well as the Ohio Highway Patrol and FBI encircled the bank and worked in collaboration.
“At the time, we didn’t know who we were dealing with,” said Lt. Tim Parker of the Springboro Police Department. “They shot at somebody.”
According to authorities, Alexander and Phillips were hiding in bushes and forced their way inside when the manager opened the bank at about 8:30 a.m. Friday. About 10 minutes later, the bank manager escaped as officers began pulling up outside. No one was injured, although the bank manager said he was shot at as he ran from the building.
On Monday in U.S. District Court in Cincinnati, Alexander and Phillips were charged with armed bank robbery and possession of a firearm in the commission of a crime of violence. If convicted, they face up to 35 years in prison, according to Fred Alverson, spokesman for the U.S. Attorney’s Office.
U.S. Magistrate Karen Litkovitz ordered Alexander and Phillips to be held without bond pending a detention hearing on Thursday.
Contrary to earlier reports, authorities said there is no third suspect.
“Based on evidence, they believe just two were involved,” said Special Agent Todd Lindgren, spokesman for the FBI in Cincinnati.
