PREBLE COUNTY —

Troopers with the Ohio State Highway Patrol seized more than $1.6 million worth of marijuana in a traffic stop this week.

Isaac Chavez, 37, of Tuscon, Ariz., is in the Preble County Jail after the seizure that occurred at 11:18 a.m. Thursday on Interstate 70.

Troopers said Chavez was in a 2011 Ford F150 truck with false U.S. government registration and he improperly changed lanes. A drug-sniffing dog was used and a probable cause search conducted.

The truck had 36 vacuum-sealed and shrink-wrapped pot bundles, weighing approximately 743 pounds, OSHP officials said in a release.

Chavez is charged with possession of marijuana, a second-degree felony, posession of criminal tools, a fifth-degree felony, and fictitious registration, a fourth-degree misdemeanor. He faces 9 years in prison and up to a $12,500 fine.

The seizure is the second largest this year by the state’s troopers, the release said.
