Arson suspected in Fairfield Twp. house fire

By Hannah Poturalski

HAMILTON —

Arson investigators are at the site of a Fairfield Twp. home that burned down early Monday.

Trish Brooks, interim fire chief in Fairfield Twp., said crews were dispatched around 1:49 a.m. today to 2083 Parrish Ave. Brooks said responding crews encountered heavy flames and smoke at the residence.

“The water main broke and we ran out of water; it delayed our ability (to extinguish the fire),” Brooks said, who added that Ross and St. Clair townships provided water tankers.

Mutual aid was also received by Hamilton, Fairfield and West Chester Twp. Crews were on scene until about 6 a.m., and were back by 10 a.m. for a rekindle, Brooks said.

Brooks said the fire is being investigated as an arson, and the home is a total loss. The structure and property are valued at $74,930, according to the Butler County Auditor’s website.

“The home was not occupied,” Brooks said. “The home had been in foreclosure and was being purchased this week.”

Within the city of Hamilton, crews battled a structure fire late Sunday. Around 11 p.m. a fire was reported at 1938 Howell Ave. after neighbors reported smoke in the area, according to Deputy Chief Jeff Shaw. Responding officials found a growing fire in the home’s basement, which was brought under control quickly, Shaw said.

Firefighters were on scene about two hours, and the cause of the blaze remains under investigation.

Shaw said damages are estimated at about $35,000. He said the home was occupied by an adult and two teenagers who were not home at the time of the fire.
