WEST CHESTER TWP. —

On the fifth anniversary of his death, friends, family and community members will gather to remember Daniel Ferraro.

Daniel Ferraro was a 19-year-old sophomore at Miami University when he was killed in a pipe bomb explosion Jan. 2, 2008, in the backyard of his family’s home in West Chester Twp. Daniel was hit with shrapnel after he and three others, including his best friend Robby Moser, detonated the homemade bomb inside an old playhouse in the yard.

“Things can happen in an instance that aren’t reversible,” said Daniel’s father, Tony Ferraro. “Before you do something, take a moment to think about consequences. (Daniel) wasn’t being malicious as much as he wanted a thrill.”

A benefit concert to raise money for the Daniel Ferraro Memorial Fund will be held at 6 p.m. Jan. 2 at Center Pointe Christian Church, 5962 Hamilton Mason Road, Liberty Twp.

Moser and his brass band from Yale University, along with local pianist Austin Wade, will be performing at the concert.

Moser was sentenced to three years probation in 2008 after pleading guilty to negligent homicide. He could have faced up to a year in prison. Moser is now completing graduate work in the School of Music at Yale.

Both Ferraro and Moser attained the prestigious Eagle Scout award while members of West Chester Troop 974.

Proceeds raised during the concert will support Eagle Scout projects in Butler County, Tony Ferraro said.

“Once an Eagle, always an Eagle,” said Tony Ferraro, a former Scoutmaster for 10 years. “Boy Scouts is about character building and learning skills. The leadership they earn; their demeanor changes and they take ownership working through problems and leading a group through a goal.”

Donations can also be mailed to the Cornerstone Church, c/o Troop 974, 7600 Princeton Glendale Road, Liberty Twp., Ohio 45011.
