More than 100 individual performers and acts have participated in the benefit concerts for Open Door Pantry in the past 20 years, but two things have remained constant: Kennedy Heights Chorus and Dave Belew.

The male chorus from the Kennedy Heights Baptist Church, the home church of Open Door Pantry founder Mildred Whitehead, has performed at every benefit concert for the food pantry since the first one in 1992. Belew, a retired CEO for Beckett Paper Company, has organized the concert performers and emceed the event since then, too

The Open Door Pantry receives no United Way funding and is entirely dependent on donations, said board president David Schul. This annual concert is its only fundraising event.

“It’s mission is to help on an emergency, temporary basis and to teach self-help to those in need,” Schul said.

This year’s benefit takes place at 3 p.m. Nov. 4 at the Zion Lutheran Church, Front and Ludlow streets. There is no admission fee, but an offering will be taken.

In addition to the male chorus, the concert features another mainstay, soprano Bess-Arlene Camacho, who will perform a duet with Jordan Quisno, a senior at Fairfield High School and one of Camacho’s students, Belew said.

Other performers include the Voices With Vision Choir, which combines singers from the Israel Baptist Church and the Pilgrim Baptist Church under the direction of Bridget Townsel.

Randy Runyon will perform the organ prelude and postlude. Belew will play a medley of his favorite hymns on the piano.

“Following another long tradition, the concert will conclude with vocal renditions by the Hamilton Fairfield Symphony Chorale, directed by Paul Stanbery,” Belew said.

The Rev. David Miller, pastor of Zion Lutheran, will also participate in the program.
