The newest captain on the Hamilton Police Department will be promoted effective Saturday.
Police Chief Scott Scrimizzi said Lt. Craig Bucheit will be assigned as the administrative bureau commander to fill the vacancy created by the recent retirement of Capt. Steve Poulemanos.
Bucheit and Lt. Marc McManus were the only officers who chose to take the captain’s promotional exam June 19.
According to the Hamilton Civil Service Commission records, Bucheit was No. 1 on the promotion list with a score of 105.2, while McManus received a score of 99.6.
Scrimizzi said McManus will be the next person promoted to captain and that will happen before November when Capt. Joe Murray is slated to retire.
“Craig is a young, energetic hard charger,” Scrimizzi said. “He’s really a smart guy and he’s going to be a huge asset to us back here.”
Scrimizzi, who became police chief in March, said it’s been about 15 years since there were major command changes in the police department.
A JournalNews review of their personnel files indicated they each have broad backgrounds and have had successful careers with the department. There were no disciplinary actions noted in any of the personnel files reviewed by the JournalNews.
The pay range for a police captain is $96,886 to $101,774, according to the city’s Civil Service and Personnel Office.
A graduate of Badin High School, Bucheit, 36, was appointed police officer in February 1997. As a patrol officer, he became known for his strong work ethic and for being proactive and highly motivated on the job, records show.
Bucheit was promoted to detective in December 2001 and worked as a juvenile investigator and on the vice squad.
As a member of the vice squad, Bucheit was commended for his work to board up a nuisance house known for prostitution and drug sales.
Bucheit was promoted to patrol sergeant in September 2006 and was also a SWAT team leader and later public affairs officer in March 2010. As the public affairs officer, he developed new initiatives through social media and with TV Hamilton. In February 2011, Bucheit was promoted to patrol lieutenant as a shift commander.
Throughout his career, Bucheit received performance evaluations of “above satisfactory” or “outstanding” by his supervisors.
McManus, 45, is a graduate of Hamilton High School and holds a bachelor’s degree in economics from the University of Cincinnati. McManus served as a combat engineer with the Ohio Army National Guard and earned an emergency medical technician’s certificate from Scarlet Oaks Vocational School in Cincinnati.
Prior to joining the HPD, McManus served as a probation officer with the Butler County Juvenile Court and for the Montgomery County Common Pleas Court.
He was appointed as a police officer in June 1994. McManus became a detective in May 1997; was promoted to sergeant in February 1999; and was promoted to lieutenant in August 2002. He is currently the “C” shift commander and oversees 20 officers.
In addition, he is a member of the SWAT team and is a graduate of the FBI’s National Academy.
Throughout his career, McManus has been consistently rated on his performance evaluations as “above expected” or “outstanding.”
