Badin students perform popular ‘Music Man’

HAMILTON —

About 30 students at Badin High School will take the stage this month for their production of “The Music Man.”

“It’s one of those shows where nearly every song will have people saying, ‘I know that one,’ ” said Lisa Clear Schaffer, producer and director alongside Tina Jacoby Welsh.

Performances will be at 7:30 p.m. March 7-9 and a 2:30 p.m. matinee March 10.

Author and composer Meredith Willson created the Broadway musical in 1957. It tells the story of Professor Harold Hill — played by Badin senior Patrick Kuhl — a traveling salesman with a great personality and a trade secret: he’s really a slick con-man.

When Hill gets off the train in River City, Iowa, circa 1912, his plans are spoiled as he takes a liking to the town librarian Marian Paroo, played by Badin sophomore Anna Schindler.

“These are some great roles for the students,” Schaffer said. “The music is tremendous. This is a musical where the music is truly front and center.”

Among song highlights are “Seventy-six Trombones,” “Till There Was You,” “(Ya Got) Trouble,” and “Lida Rose.”

Tickets are $10 each; $8 each for a group of six or more. Order forms are available in the front office at Badin High School, or by calling 513-863-3993.

Supporting roles include: junior Mike Hoelle as Professor Hill’s sidekick Marcellus Washburn; freshman Christian Sansone as Mayor Shinn; junior Emily Ullman as Mrs. Paroo; senior Caroline Beckman as Mrs. Shinn; and a men’s barbershop quartet comprised of juniors Zach Gibbemeyer and David Fischer and freshmen Nathan Maue and T.J. O’Neil.

“We have some very creative sets ready for the show,’’ Schaffer said. “Badin Drama isn’t just about performance on stage, but also stagecraft, costuming and everything that goes into making the show go on.”
