Howard, 56, was appointed on Feb. 3 by Ohio Gov. John Kasich to succeed the late Craig Hedric, who died at a local hospital in November after collapsing in his Liberty Twp. home. Howard called the appointment “bittersweet” because he aspired to become a judge, but he’s taking the seat his best friend once sat.

Howard will take the bench on Monday, Feb. 27.

There were three Butler County residents seeking the judicial appointment. The Butler County GOP recommended to Kasich that Howard be appointed to the seat. Others seeking the seat were Fairfield Municipal Court Judge Joyce Campbell and Peter D. Meyer, a senior patent attorney for Procter & Gamble.
