Deputies with the Champaign County Sheriff's Office declined to release the injured student's condition or say what hospital the student was taken to.
The initial call of shots fired came in at 7:36 a.m. and the incident was contained by 8:20 a.m. The shooter, who has not been identified, is in custody.
The Champaign County prosecuting attorney said the investigation into the shooting remains active and provided few details about the attack.
He said the student's family has been notified and the student is receiving treatment. Other than the one victim, students are safe and the building has been secured.
West Liberty superintendent Kraig Hissong said the incident marked a tragic day for the school district and added that he was very thankful with how staff and students responded.
The shooting happened right at the beginning of the school day, Hissong said. The school where the shooting happened is a K-12 building.
"I can’t say how pleased I am with how staff and students handled this today," Kissong said.
Lilly Keller, a student at West Liberty, said she and her classmates were told over the loudspeaker that there was a shooter on campus and ordered to go on lockdown. She said she didn't know the shooter's identity.
Keller said students broke out windows and ran out of the school. They ran to a nearby house after being told to, she said.
Initial reports indicated the shot came through a window and hit someone in the boys’ bathroom near the science wing.
A firearm has reportedly been recovered.
