Hero dog protects goats, deer after family evacuates wildfires

Odin was not trying to be a hero.

The Great Pyrenees did not want to leave the family’s baby goats when everyone else was evacuating approaching wildfires.

"Despite the sounds of exploding propane tanks, twisting metal, and the hot swirling winds, Odin refused to leave our family of eight bottle-fed rescue goats," owner Roland Hendel wrote. "Hours later, when we had found relative safety, we cried for Odin and our goats. I was sure I had sentenced them to a horrific and agonizing death."

Hendel and his family returned days later to find Odin and the eight goats, as well as some deer who joined them for safety at the charred remains of the home.

“Odin was weak, and limping, his once thick and beautiful coat singed orange, his whiskers melted,” Hendel said. “I am crying tears of gratitude and awe at his bravery and devotion.”

Odin was reunited with his sister, Tessa, and his condition continues to improve, Hendel said.

However, the family's still reeling from losing everything in the fire. They set up a crowd source funding site to help rebuild a pumphouse for fresh water and a barn for Odin, Tessa and the goats.
