NEW YORK — A prosecutor in a case against a North Carolina woman accused of snatching a newborn from a New York City hospital more than two decades ago says she will plead guilty Friday to criminal charges.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Andrea Surratt (suh-RAT') told a judge Thursday the plea will take place as part of a deal with the government.

Raleigh, N.C., resident Ann Pettway has pleaded not guilty to a kidnapping charge. She was arrested in January 2011 on charges she kidnapped Carlina White from Harlem Hospital in August 1987.

White is now 24 years old. The FBI says Pettway took the baby after her own childbearing efforts failed.

Public defender Robert Baum hasn't responded to a telephone call seeking comment.
