Monroe accepts easements for future multi-use paths/sidewalks

Work on a pair of multi-use paths/sidewalks took another step forward as easements from property owners were accepted by Monroe City Council.

Council approved accepting the easements that will lead to the construction of an eight-foot multi-use path/sidewalk along the eastern side of Main Street between Lebanon Street and Community Park and a sidewalk around the future Monroe Medical Building site at the northwest corner of Ohio 63 and Main Street.

Information provided to council by City Manager Bill Brock said two years ago council approved the engineering for design documents related to construction of the multi-use path/sidewalk. He said it was determined that various widths of easements, ranging from two to nine feet, from adjacent property owners to allow for temporary work outside of the final sidewalk easement area for the construction of the path.

The project is expected to bid by early spring and construction could be completed this fall, Development Director Kevin Chesar said.

“It’s much needed,” Vice Mayor Dan Clark said.

The other sidewalk project for the Monroe Medical Building site was approved by the city Planning Commission last summer.

Brock said city staff requested from the developer a water main easement to be included on the west side of the development to provide looping of the water main for additional water service to the Cornerstone Subdivision to provide redundancy of service to this area.

In addition, a sidewalk is required as a part of the development and due to topography issues with the ditch line, city staff has worked with the developer to create an eight-foot multi-use path along north Main Street that will require an easement to be given to the city.

Brock said the multi-use path will be constructed by the developer as a part of the project and the water line is not scheduled to be construction until a future date.
