In the next few weeks, one of Middletown’s major industrial thoroughfares will be reopened, even as a $5.3 million widening project continues.

Scott Tadych, city public works and utilities director, said Oxford State Road is slated to be reopened around Nov. 1. A large section of the road had been closed so that infrastructure and new roadway construction could take place.

Tadych said the eastern half of the project from the AK Steel slag haul intersection to Spurlino Concrete is nearing completion. He said construction work has included water main installation, storm sewer installation, cement stabilization of the sub-grade and new roadway construction that included curb and gutter and asphalt paving.

“Work will continue on the western half of the project as weather permits over the winter and through the 2017 construction season with project completion scheduled for fall of 2017,” he said. “The western half will be construction with maintaining through traffic.”

The widening project also includes installing heavy duty pavement to accommodate truck traffic between Yankee Road and Spurlino Way.

In addition, Tadych said the project includes other improvements such as new left turn lanes, curbs, gutters, a drainage system, replacing traffic signals and lessening a curve in the road.

At the western end of Oxford State Road, there will be more road construction on Yankee Road in 2017.

The $7.42 million Phase 3 improvements to Yankee Road will include a widening of the street from Oxford State Road north to Lafayette Avenue. Heavy-duty pavement will accommodate truck traffic. Partial funding has been secured from Ohio-Kentucky-Indiana Regional Council of Governments and the Ohio Public Works Commission.
