Hearing postponed for Middletown man found with drugs, $4,400 in cash

UPDATE @ noon, Aug. 2: The preliminary hearing for William Peters Jr., scheduled for this morning in Middletown Municipal Court, has been rescheduled until next week, according to court documents.

Peters also paid his $5,200 bond and has been released from Middletown City Jail, officials said.

INITIAL REPORT, Aug. 1:

A Middletown man was charged with drug abuse after police responded to a report of shots fired on Tytus Avenue.

Middletown responded at 1:45 a.m. Sunday to the 1700 block of Tytus Avenue on a report of shots being fired. When police parked near Tapsters bar on Tytus Avenue, they saw William Peters Jr. sitting in a black SUV, according to a police report.

Because police couldn’t see his hands, they ordered him to place his hands on the steering wheel, according to the report. He did not obey their commands, police said.

An officer pointed his gun at Peters, who allegedly threw a clear baggie in the back of his vehicle, police said.

Police said they discovered 4.3 grams of crack cocaine in the vehicle.

Peters, 22, was then taken to Middletown City Jail. According to a police report, the $4,458 in cash that police found on Peters included a counterfeit $20 bill.

His arraignment is set for Wednesday in Middletown Municipal Court, according to court documents.
