Tiny therapy horses from Ross Twp. to appear in Rose Parade

Some Ross Twp. horses are en route this week to California, where they will go through training before making an appearance Jan. 2 in the 128th Rose Parade.

But these aren’t typical horses.

Miniature therapy horses from Seven Oaks Farm are making the journey to California. On the way, they plan to visit Ronald McDonald Houses and other locations, bringing holiday cheer.

Lisa Moad owns the 40-acre farm in Ross Twp. with her husband, Dr. John Moad, a dermapathologist in Dayton. Her “Seven Oaks Farm Miniature Therapy Horses” is a non-profit organization, and it accepts donations for its visits to places like nursing homes.

Of the 32 horses she has rescued, 15 are trained to make therapy visits, which happen daily.

Moad visits about 20 nursing homes a month with her daughter-in-law, Kate Moad, or the other handler, Shelby Reynolds. They also work with police in Cincinnati and Hamilton on events as well as at the Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport to calm nervous passengers.

The tiny horses weigh between 80 and 100 pounds and measure 24 to 29 inches tall.

One of the horses participating in the Rose Parade will be wearing a Hamilton Police Department vest, according to Moad.

The 128th Rose Parade will be broadcast live beginning at 8 a.m. PST Jan. 2.
