Sheriff Jones against proposed gun bill

Butler County Sheriff Richard K. Jones is adamantly against House Bill 147, a proposal that calls for doing away with the state’s licensing procedure that would allow anyone 21 or older to carry a concealed firearm with no training.

“This is an absolute no-brainer to me,” Jones said about the bill that was introduced Tuesday night. “You are talking about a weapon that can and does take the lives of people every single day. This is quite possibly the most absurd idea I have heard in my tenure as sheriff.”

Jones was particularly upset with Wes Retherford, R-Hamilton, who introduced the bill.

“I don’t believe in any bill he introduces,” Jones said. “He comes off half-cocked, no pun intended.”

Jones said before anyone handles a gun, they should go through training.

“The ‘bad guys’ already have guns, but when they shoot at people, they usually miss,” he said. “As police officers, we have training. Nobody supports the constitution more than I do.”

Ohio is an open-carry state, which means, if an individual is legally authorized to own a weapon, and that weapon is not banned under state or federal law, they can carry it in the open, unconcealed manner.
