Portrait of Butler County judge who died in 2016 unveiled

The former courtroom of the late Judge Craig Hedric was packed this morning with friends, family and members of the bar as a portrait of the Butler County Common Pleas judge was unveiled.

Hedric, a native of Oxford and a proud Miami University graduate, died at his Liberty Twp. home in November. He was 55.

Judge Greg Howard, who now sits at the same bench that was occupied by his longtime friend, did the unveiling honors.

Sitting front and center were Hedric’s wife, Annette; son, Taylor; parents, Darrell and Jan; and sister Kim and brother-in-law Phil Morrical and their son Kyle.

Hedric’s daughter, Alyssa, was traveling with the Miami RedHawks softball team, according to the family.

In recent years portraits have been hung in courtrooms after the retirement of common pleas judges, Howard said.

“It is a way to honor their service to the community and their service to the legal community by having a portrait commissioned and hung in the court,” he said.

“Unfortunately, Craig didn’t get the chance to retire … but the same honor is deserving and bestowed on him today,” Howard said. “He would appreciate you all being here as well.”

Howard said the portrait of the smiling judge in his robe captured Hedric’s personality.

“I hope I don’t have peripheral vision out the left side of my face,” Howard said with a laugh. “I am up here on the bench every day … that smile at some point will turn to a smirk.”

After the short ceremony, guests were treated with cupcakes in the shape of the Miami University ‘M.’

Hedric was elected Judge of the Court of Common Pleas General Division in November 2006 and began serving on the bench on Jan. 3, 2007.

In 1986, Hedric graduated from the University Of Toledo College Of Law and went into private practice in Hamilton.

In January 2001, he became an assistant Butler County prosecuting attorney and remained in that position until being elected judge.
