MLK Day group expands programs into summer

The Live the Dream Committee, best known for its annual March for Unity and student writing contest on Martin Luther King Jr. Day, has added two summer activities for residents who want to celebrate racial diversity.

On Thursday, June 22, Live the Dream will gather at the weekly concert series at The Square @ Union Center. Residents are invited to join members of the group at the 6 p.m. performance by the band Color Blind.

“Anyone who’s available can meet, talk, sit, and show that we are an inclusive community, that different races can come together,” Live the Dream Founder Gail Webster said. “(We can) be a more visible presence.”

This concert was chosen partly because of its theme: “A Community With Heart — Kindness Takeover.”

It will also include a collection for Reach out Lakota, the Animal Friends Humane Society Petmobile, and the Made to Love store, which sells handmade jewelry to benefit Haitians.

The second summer event is the July 1 West Chester Symphony concert in Keehner Park, part of the West Chester Concert Series.

Those attending as part of Live the Dream will meet at 5 p.m. for a potluck dinner before the 6 p.m. concert. West Chester Twp. will also host an ice cream social after the concert.

The summer concert series focuses on “celebrating as a community and spending time together, and Live the Dream is all about that,” said Barb Wilson, a spokeswoman for West Chester Twp.

Both activities, according to Webster, arose from student ideas “to make West Chester and Liberty a ‘Beloved Community.’ ”

“Beloved Community” refers to King’s ideal society, where, according to The King Center, “all people can share in the wealth of the earth.”

The concept was the theme of the group’s student writing contest this year, which asked Lakota students to interview someone from a different background and write about what they learned.

The summer activities will be Live the Dream’s “first attempt at intentionally trying to bring about any event to move towards a Beloved Community,” Webster said.
