State troopers and fire crews were dispatched to U.S. 68 in southern Clinton County around 10:41 p.m. on a reported three-vehicle crash involving a motorcycle.

An initial investigation found a 1984 Ford sedan, driven by Edwin Schmid III, of Midland, Ohio, was traveling south on U.S. 68 and stopped to turn left into a private driveway, state troopers said in a media release. While Schmid’s vehicle was stopped waiting to turn, a 2008 Pontiac sedan also traveling south on U.S. 68, driven by Jacob Henderson, 18, of Mount Orab, crashed into the back of Schimd’s vehicle.

The crash sent Schmid’s Ford left of center, and into the path of a motorcycle that was traveling northbound.

The motorcycle operator, identified as Jerran Adkins, 43, of Middletown, was pronounced dead at the scene. The passenger on the motorcycle, Jennifer Adkins, 43, of Middletown was seriously injured and was transported to Miami Valley Hospital by a CareFlight medical helicopter.

Schmid and Henderson were not injured in the crash.

State troopers said Jerran and Jennifer Adkins were not wearing helmets at the time of the crash.

Investigators did not indicate what factors might have led up to the crash, and the incident remains under investigation.
