Middletown’s Central Connections under new leadership

Middletown’s senior center, Central Connections, has announced several leadership changes.

The center's current executive director, Ann Munafo, will retire April 30, as previously reported by the Journal-News.

Munafo will be replaced by Monica L. Smith, who assumed duties as executive director of Central Connections on Feb. 1, the center announced today.

“Monica Smith was the top applicant for the executive director position,” said Reva Owens, chair of Central Connections’ board of trustees, in a prepared statement. “I feel confident that the center will run smoothly under her leadership.”

Smith, who lives in Cincinnati, graduated from Ohio University with a bachelor of science in community health and a master’s degree in health promotion/disease prevention. She most recently worked as executive director of Franciscan Ministries Inc. in Cincinnati.

Smith also has experience in serving senior citizens, according to Owens. She previously worked for Life Enriching Communities (Twin Towers and Twin Lakes), Mercy Health Partners, and the Franciscan Health System of the Ohio Valley, according to the statement from Central Connections.

Joining Smith in leading Central Connections is Lisa Biedenbach as Director of Operations. She will oversee communications, marketing, membership, volunteers and administration.

Biedenbach, a graduate of St. Bonaventure University, has a background in corporate and nonprofit communications. She recently worked as an administrative assistant for the Franciscan Sisters of the Poor and as Director of Product Development for Franciscan Media.

Biedenbach resides in Ross Twp.

Central Connections has also appointed four new members to its board of trustees.

Those named to the board for three-year terms include:

  • Marc Hagen, owner of Kool-Ease Inc., and a resident of Liberty Twp.
  • Anita Scott Jones, hospital relations/community outreach manager for Atrium Medical Center and a resident of Middletown
  • John Lyons, retired finance director for the city of Middletown and a Middletown resident
  • J. C. Shew, attorney with J. C. Shew and Matthew T. Dixon Attorneys at Law and a resident of Middletown
