The Middletown Arts Center has introduced the Featured Artist Program, which will offer scholarships to beginner and experienced artists looking to learn a new medium.
The new program also promotes the surrounding local communities, including Middletown, Madison, Monroe, Franklin and Trenton by showcasing local landscapes, leaders and area treasures as inspiration for works of art, said Middletown Arts Center Executive Director Hilary Nauman.
“When an artist participates, they agree to create a piece of artwork that is inspired by something in one of those communities, whether it’s geography, nature, a community leader or member, and that stays on loan with us for a year. Then, we go out and display the art in businesses, or organizations within the community,” she said.
The Featured Artist Program offers scholarships for an eight-week session of classes in all of the mediums MAC offers including photography, drawing, painting, ceramics, glass, jewelry and fiber. Each scholarship is valued at about $100. Additionally the program will provide a stipend for art or presentation supplies.
“I am excited about this program on a number of different levels. It’s a fun way to experience something new. Maybe you never thought about taking a ceramic, or a jewelry-making class, and this gives you that chance to see if it’s a good fit for you,” Nauman said.
The program was launched in August. The next session of classes will begin on Oct. 24. MAC’s featured artists will also be shared on social media, so that the community can follow the progress and explore the area while looking for works on display.
The Featured Artist Program is made possible in part by a grant from ArtsWave as well as a grant from the Middletown Community Foundation. Applications are accepted on an ongoing basis, first come, first served.
