Madison leader changing schools

Superintendent Tom York will be new principal at Talawanda.

OXFORD — More than 40 years after receiving his diploma from Talawanda High School, Tom York is coming back home.

The Talawanda Board of Education named York, the superintendent of Madison Local Schools for the last three years, as its new high school principal.

York, 60, also has been superintendent of Edgewood City Schools. He was approved Monday night during a Talawanda school board work session.

He replaces Vicki Brunn, who has accepted the position of director of human resources at Talawanda.

Superintendent Kelly Spivey said York brings a wealth of experience to the job.

“He has a tremendous track record of being able to build relationships and has the ability to engage learners,” Spivey said of York, who has been an educator for 33 years, including 24 at Edgewood.

“I’ve been at it a while,” York said.

“From a personal standpoint, I’ve had so many experiences, I feel like I can identify with just about anybody,” he pointed out. “Growing up in the country, working on a farm. And my dad worked at Champion Paper, so I can identify with people down in the trenches who work in factories.”

York was raised in Hanover Twp., attended school there for six years and graduated from Talawanda in 1969.

He has earned bachelor’s degrees from Miami University and Evangel University and master’s degrees from Assemblies of God Theological and Xavier University and is working on his educational doctorate degree.

York emphasized that he wants the staff “to feel valued and know that we think they’re doing a wonderful job, and we’ll continue to give them the tools they need.

“Talawanda has a very proud history,” he said, “and we want to add to that. It’s exciting for me to come back to my alma mater, and it’s wonderful that I get to come back in a new building.”
